The Royal 559 Academy coaching staff is comprised of professional coaches with vast and diverse levels of experience, ranging from elite high school and club levels to international and US National Team experience. Our coaches pride themselves in being great role models, mentors and students of the game. They are committed to the holistic mission of the Royal 559 Academy focused on athletes, coaches, and parents.
Coach Maes is a co-founder of Royal 559 and currently coaches the U18 boys group, as well as serves as the Boys Director. He began his coaching career at Steele Canyon HS in San Diego. From 2004 to 2007, he served as the Head Coach for both boys and girls water polo, as well as swimming. In 2005, he was voted Grossmont South Conference Boys Water Polo Coach of the Year.
In 2007, Nic moved back to Clovis and began assisting the Boys Water Polo and Swimming programs at Buchanan HS (his alma mater). From 2007-2010, Coach Maes helped lead The Bears to three consecutive CIF-CS Final appearances (2007-2009), winning a conference title in 2007 and the CIF-CS Title in 2009.
In 2011, Nic was named Co-Head Coach of Boys Water Polo. He helped guide Buchanan to the CIF-CS Championship game in 2012, 2013 and 2014, winning back-to-back titles in 2013 & 2014 and three conference championships.
He has been named TRAC Conference Coach of the Year on multiple occasions and has developed multiple athletes who have gone on to compete at many high level college programs.
